Most searched Events
World Cup 2014
Malaysian Airlines crash
Ice Bucket Challenge
Fifa™ world cup in Brazil
The number one searched event in Dubai with no explanation needed, really-the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The massive sporting event which brings together all countries around the world. The massive sporting event, held in Brazil, pulled in hundreds of thousands of viewers across the world in the final, where Germany took the cup.
The second highest trending event searched by those in Dubai which is definitely worth a mention is (the exact term being “Malaysian Airlines Crash”), presumably regarding both the almost spooky vanishing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 on 8th March 2014. While it has officially been deduced that the passenger plane carrying 239 people (including crew) crashed somewhere in the Southern Indian Ocean, no solid evidence has been given to support this claim.
Because of the strange and uneasy feeling this tragedy sent to people all over the world, it is no wonder that it was the second most searched term on Google in Dubai. To add to this, the same search term could have referred to (or been in conjunction with) the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines MH17 near the Russian/ Ukraine border, killing all 298 on board. Investigations are still ongoing as to who was responsible for this senseless tragedy. The fascination in this crash was especially high as it happened just a few months after MH370 disappeared.
People / Personalities
Philip Seymour Hoffman
When it came to most searched people, 4 of the top 5 searched in Dubai were celebrities that had passed away. One can understand the fascination when it comes to celebrity deaths-we often see the rich and famous as untouchable and invincible-when really they are just like every other person on the planet who can just as easily succumb to illness, accidents, crimes or natural deaths. Celebrity searches soar when their death has occurred-people want to know the hows, the wheres and the whys.
The 4 said famous individuals included businesswoman Sunanda Pushkar (suicide), Joan Rivers (complications from routine surgery), Philip Seymour Hoffman (accidental overdose), and the number one most searched person in Dubai, the beloved actor and comedian, Robin Williams. His shocking death by suicide sent shockwaves around the world and brought mental illness to the forefront of the news. Behind the charismatic, hilarious and talented man who brought some of the most loved characters to life, lived a tortured soul, so burdened by depression and hopelessness, that he felt the need to end his life. The world still mourns.
